RESOLUTION NO. 85-4-R
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY DECLARING THE WEEK
OF JANUARY 6-12, 1985 AFRICAN RELIEF WEEK.
WHEREAS, a killer famine of unparalleled intensity is sweeping across
ca endangering 185 million people in 27 African countries, and
WHEREAS, many of the affected countries are landlocked making trans-
portation of food difficult to impossible, and
WHEREAS, agricultural production in Africa has virtually disappeared
due to the lack of rainfall during the last two years, and
WHEREAS, the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has
already distributed 26,440 tons of relief supplies but the famine has intensifiE
and spread, and
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross has set a goal to raise $5 million
for African Relief from local chapters in a nationwide fund raising campaign,
and
WHEREAS, the funds raised will go for food, medical supplies and
portation especially for children, nursing mothers and the elderly in the
lve countries most severely impacted by the disaster.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
lares the week of January 6-12, 1985 to be African Relief Week, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Kodiak Island residents are encouraged to
ribute to the American Red Cross for this disaster relief fund.
