Report for the roof installation for two outbuildings at the North Pacific Fuel Dock, Kodiak Alaska.
Dear Terry,
I evaluated the proposed installation of 5/8 ply sheeting either replacing or adding to the corrugated
metal roofing currently installed. The current roof structure consists of roof trusses with 2" x 4"
purlins laid perpendicular to the trusses at 3' centers. The purlins are laid flat (wide edge) to the upper
face of the trusses.
5/8" plywood is adequate to span the 2" x 4" purlins. The span rating on 5/8 plywood exposure 1 is
40/20. This correlates to a maximum of 50 lbs per square foot with 36" spacing. With the light
weight steel roofing, the plywood is adequate to handle the loads imposed. The maximum uplift is
calculated to be 18.31bs per square foot at that exposed location and considering the height of the
structure of above the water.
Attach the plywood oriented vertically so it spans two of the purlins. Cut the sheets so the plywood
ends on the purlins. Attach the sheathing to the purlins with grabber screws 6" o.c. penetrating into
the purlins at least 1.25 ". Use roof clips mid -span between the purlins on the free edges of the
plywood. Attach the roof sheathing as per manufacture's recommendation, but place the clips at
distances of no more than 3' o.c., thereby tying each attachment into the roof sheathing twice.
Sincerely,
/s/Joseph J. Symonoski P.E.
