BOROUGH CLERK'S OFFICE
A regular meeting of the Joint Building Code Review Committee was held on Monday -MaT31 72612,
in the Conference Room of the Kodiak Island Borough Building, 710 Mill Bay Road. The meeting was
called to order at 4 p.m.
Present were Committee members Scott Arndt, John Butler, Gregg Hacker, Ed Mahoney, and Ex
Officio members Jerrol Friend. Staff members present were Building Official Doug Mathers, Assistant
Building Official Ted Hansen, and Borough Deputy Clerk, Marylynn McFarland.
Absent members were Scott Bonney and Ex Officio member Randy Bishop.
A. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
ARNDT moved to approve the agenda.
Motion carried unanimously.
B. APPROVAL OF MINUTES — May 7, 2012
ARNDT moved to approve the meeting minutes of May 7, 2012.
Motion carried unanimously.
C. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1. Adoption of the 2012 International Residential Code
No action was taken.
D. NEW BUSINESS
1. Review of the 2012 IRC and the 1997 UBC occupancy standards.
The Committee reviewed and compared occupancy and fire requirements of the 2012 International
Residential Code with the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Exemptions voiced by the group included the
Eaves and Stairs category. Mathers was going to research where the rise and setback change
originated. It was also suggested that exemptions for existing conditions meet the building code at
the time of initial construction. Mathers will have suggested wording for requested changes to the
code at the next scheduled meeting.
The Committee was encouraged to review sprinkler systems and structural building planning R301,
Page 25, Design Criteria for the next scheduled meeting.
