Regular Meeting
October 26, 2011
A regular meeting of the Kodiak Workforce Regional Advisory Council was held on Wednesday, October
26, 2011, in the Kodiak Island Borough Conference Room. The meeting was called to order at 12:08 p.m.
Council members present were Chairperson Jerome Selby, Robert Banks, Alma Canete -Hall, Alisha
Drabek, Jared Griffin, Aimee Kniaziowski, Peggy Rauwolf, Sonny Vinberg, and Brenda Zawacki. Ex
Officio member present was Kodiak Island Borough School District Superintendent Stewart McDonald.
Staff present was Kodiak Island Borough School District Administrative Assistant Bonnie Baker.
Council members absent were Trevor Brown, Brian Himelbloom, LCDR Dan Jones, Jacqueline Madsen,
and Lorraine Stewart.
Citizens at large included Barry Altenhof, James Brooks, Alan Fugleberg, Julie Matweyou, Adelia
Myrick. and Sheila Roberts.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
RAUWOLF moved to approve the agenda as presented.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
A. Workforce Needs Survey Results
McDonald reported that the survey results were placed on the Kodiak Island Borough School District's
website.

B. Career Strands Video Project Update
McDonald reported professional movie makers from Apple agreed to assist with the Kodiak career stands
video as they recognized the video would have a state -wide impact. McDonald requested a list of
potential interviewees from each Council member with a deadline of October 28, 2011. The video was
expected to be completed in November 2011.

NEW BUSINESS
A. Agriculture and Natural Resources Seat
The KWRAC Agriculture and Natural Resources seat was vacated due to Tuck Bonney's
election to the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly. Selby would communicate with cannery -
related contacts to encourage interest in the seat.
B. SWAMC (Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference) Project
SWAMC Executive Director Andy Varner and Economic Development Specialist Erik O'Brien detailed
their organization's interest to research PSP (paralytic shellfish poison) levels in Kodiak Island waters for
potential oyster mariculture. Specialist O'Brien stated a partnership with Kodiak Island Borough School
District was in the initial stages to utilize high school students for the research.
C. Kodiak College — Educational Support for Local Workforce Needs
Kodiak College Assistant Director Alan Fugleberg reported courses to be offered next semester to support
local workforce needs included a certified nursing program, numerous computer/business courses, and
four OSHA - related online courses.
D. Kodiak College Adult Education — College and Career Awareness Course
Kodiak College Adult Basic Education Coordinator Adelia Myrick reported the college would pilot a
thirty -hour College and Career Awareness course next semester to provide support to individuals testing
below college level. Myrick stated the KWRAC workforce needs survey would be essential to the course
in terms of identified local needs and contacts for possible student internships.
E. Next Steps /Local Workforce Needs
The Council determined follow -up contact would be made to the participating employers of the survey to
include the survey results, a comprehensive list of workforce training being offered Kodiak -wide, and a
request for feedback. In addition, the list of current workforce training would be posted on the Job Service
webs ite.

COUNCIL MEMBERS' COMMENTS
Vinberg expressed his anticipation of the Kodiak career strands video.
Griffin encouraged continued research of mariculture as well as diversification for marketing.
