Therefore the consensus of the solid waste advisory board is to recommend and urge the KIB to establish a Public Outreach/Education coordinator to develop and deliver timely information regarding Solid Waste Management, recycling and related issues. Our reasoning is that any changes in waste management and recycling will not be a quick fix. It will take time to educate and persuade all of us to change our habits about the way we deal with solid waste and recyclables. Issues that need to be addressed over the near and long term include the following: • Curbside v. dumpster pick -up or combination thereof • Incentives to recycle and cost savings related to recycling • Bear issues • Illegal dumping and enforcement issues • Creating awareness of re -use and reclaiming solid waste • Site generation at the baler of alternative energy • Proper handling of hazardous and industrial waste • Business, cruise ship, harbor and cannery related solid waste issues • Finally and most importantly the need to involve the entire community in the waste management and recycling discussion so that these issues receive a complete and thorough public review this requires a full time public outreach/education coordinator In addition this coordinator would be an effective resource for all of the other departments in the Borough.
