FY2006-03 Freight Services to Outlying CommunitiesA RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
ENCOURAGING OTHER FREIGHT COMPANIES TO PROVIDE FREIGHT
SERVICES TO THE OUTLYING COMMUNITIES OF KODIAK ISLAND THAT WILL BE
LOST DUE TO THE BUYOUT OF WESTERN PIONEER SHIPPING SERVICES
WHEREAS, Western Pioneer Shipping Services (Western Pioneer) will be closing their
doors due to a buyout; and
WHEREAS, Western Pioneer was bought out by Coastal Transportation which is
exercising its option to not continue the freight side of the business, but to keep the
retail outlet, Alaska Ship Supply, which does business in areas of the state like Dutch
Harbor; and
WHEREAS, Western Pioneer, which has a terminal on Marine Way in Kodiak and stops
in the communities of Larsen Bay, Old Harbor, Ouzinkie, and Port Lions, will be turning
over its building lease and operations to Carlile Transportation Systems, until the sale
is complete; and
WHEREAS, the outlying communities of Kodiak Island may lose valuable freight
services as a result of the buyout of Western Pioneer which could have a significant
economic impact;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly encourages other freight
companies to support the outlying communities of Kodiak Island by providing freight
services to these communities as economically as possible for all parties involved.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution of the Kodiak
Island Borough Assembly be sent to other freight companies to encourage them to
provide this valuable freight service.
