2005-24 Port Lions' Bear Proof DumpstersWHEREAS, the City of Port Lions is presently writing a grant proposal to the Denali Commission to
request funding for bear -proof dumpsters to be placed at the entrance to the City's landfill area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Port Lions is closely working with the Native Village of Port Lions to resolve
their City's issues with poor waste management; and
WHEREAS, the Native Village of Port Lions has proposed their "Port Lions Bear Rehabilitation
Project" which focuses on surveying the landfill, removing vegetation from the site, installing chain-
link and electric fencing, and educating the public on safety and proper waste disposal; and
WHEREAS, with the funds distributed by the Denali Commission for Solid Waste Management
Projects, the City of Port Lions will put finishing touches on the "Port Lions Bear Rehabilitation
Project by embarking on their "City of Port Lions Refuse Containment Project;" and
WHEREAS, the Project will minimize the contamination of drinking water, protect subsistence food
sources, encourage proper disposal of waste, decrease the occurrences of burning garbage, reduce
the amount of blowing trash, and trim down on wildlife interaction with landfill waste; and
WHEREAS, the Native Village of Port Lions supports the "City of Port Lions Refuse Containment
Project" and has granted the use of Environmental Planning and related information and has offered
the assistance of their Environmental Specialist and staff;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY supports
the City of Port Lions' Solid Waste Management Project that is not only a community -wide concern
but a Borough -wide concern.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
urges the Denali Commission to approve the City of Port Lions' grant proposal for bear -proof
dumpsters to be installed at the entrance to the City's landfill area.
