A HESOLU ION OF 1 HE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
ACCEPTING A GRANT FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR FISH
AND WILDLIFE SERVICE FOR GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) DATA
ACQUISITION AND PLANNING TO PROTECT WOMENS BAY WATERSHED RESOURCES
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough applied for a grant from the United States Fish and
Wildlife Service for GIS data acquisition and planning to protect Womens Bay watershed
resources, and
WHEREAS, the Assembly's 2004 -2008 Strategic Plan identified the development of a
Borough GIS system as a priority,
WHEREAS, the Borough has undertaken work on updating the 1982 Womens Bay
Comprehensive Plan, which requires the collection and analysis of GIS data,
WHEREAS, the Borough's Parks and recreation Committee is developing a Kodiak Island
Comprehensive Trails Plan, including trails in the Womens Bay area, that requires the
inventory and analysis of GIS data,
WHEREAS, the goals of this project are to partner with Alaska Department of Fish and
Game (ADFG), the Kodiak Soil and Water Conservation District (KSCS), the USDA Natural
Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), and the Womens Bay Community Council (WBCC)
to create thematic maps documenting fish and wildlife habitat values and historical land
use information,
WHEREAS, the Unites States Fish and Wildlife Service has approved a grant in the amount
of $25,000 based on our grant application, and
WHEREAS, the acceptance of the grant award is necessary in order to utilize the funds to
pay for orthophotography of the Womens Bay watershed; to incorporate the
orthophotography into the Borough's GIS; and to use the GIS for the inventory and
mapping of the resource information from the Womens Bay watershed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH THAT the Borough Manager is hereby authorized to accept the United States
Fish and Wildlife Service funds in the amount of $25,000 and to administer those funds for
GIS data acquisition and planning to protect Womens Bay watershed resources.
