A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION
OF A FIBER OPTIC LINE TO KODIAK
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly through its strategic plan will continue to
pursue high quality telecommunications access through fiber optics and internet access to
outlying areas; and
WHEREAS, it is desirable to ensure that telecommunications are integrated into the long-
term plans that allow for maximum efficiencies; and
WHEREAS, the ability to connect to a fiber optic line would greatly improve communications
between the Kodiak communities, the state, and the nation; and
WHEREAS, access to fiber optic will create vast opportunities for education, commerce, and
communications that currently do not exist in Kodiak's communities; and
WHEREAS, the cost of doing business electronically via the internet will potentially be lower
with the development and construction of the fiber optic communication bridge; and
WHEREAS, a fiber optic link would improve network performance, communication services,
and provide for video conferencing; and
WHEREAS, allowing Kodiak's communities to access broad band communications expands
the role of the internet and related technology; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY THAT
the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly supports bonding to build a fiber optic connection to
Kodiak Island as an economic development project.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
ASSEMBLY THAT the current fiber optic link under design to Kodiak via Cook Inlet should
receive maximum support as it provides fiber optic services to the Kenai Peninsula and a basis
for future links to the Bristol Bay region.
