A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY SUPPORTING GRANT
FUNDING TO CONTINUE AND EXPAND RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSATIVE FACTOR OR
FACTORS RELATING TO THE INCREASING CRYPTORCHISM IN SITKA BLACKTAIL DEER
IN THE KODIAK ARCHIPELAGO
WHEREAS, since 1994, the number of cryptorchid and monorchid Sitka Blacktail Deer
found in the Kodiak Archipelago has dramatically increased to the point of extreme
abnormality; and
WHEREAS, this condition is viewed as an unquantified threat to the deer population of the
Archipelago; and
WHEREAS, local subsistence, sport hunting, and wildlife viewing may be negatively
affected by this condition; and
WHEREAS, since 1998 Dr. James P. "Jake" Jacobson of Kodiak, Dr. George Bubenik of
the University of Guelph, Ontario, and others have funded, implemented, collected and
conducted analysis of such samples; and
WHEREAS, the increase in cryptorchism and monorchism warrants continuation and
expansion of research into cause or causes of this abnormal condition;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the Assembly supports grant funding to Dr. Jacobson and Dr. Bubenik to
continue and expand their research into the cause or causes of abnormal cryptorchism in
Sitka Blacktail Deer in the Kodiak Archipelago.
