A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
SUPPORTING AN EXTENSION OF FUNDING PROVIDED BY THE EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL
TRUSTEE COUNCIL, UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30, 2004, TO ADDRESS THE REMOVAL OF
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FROM THE VILLAGES ON KODIAK ISLAND
- AKHIOK, KARLUK, LARSEN BAY, OLD HARBOR, OUZINKIE, AND PORT LIONS -
AND SUPPORTING THE KODIAK ISLAND VILLAGE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE'S
COOPERATIVE AND COORDINATED IMPLEMENTATION OF
THE EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL (EVOS) PLAN #99304
WHEREAS, the villages of Kodiak Island were harmed by oil released by the Exxon Valdez; and
WHEREAS, the villages of Kodiak Island are benefiting from the grant money provided by the
Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council to address the removal of hazardous material from the
villages including the removal of oils, batteries, household hazardous waste, and other solid waste
that threatens the community's human and environmental health; and
WHEREAS, the removal of these hazardous materials will prevent the harmful affects to the
natural resources that are a tremendous value to our community; and
WHEREAS, because of the EVOS grant, village residents are receiving specialized training which
provides local and permanent expertise in the community to address future human and
environmental health issues involving hazardous materials and other solid wastes; and
WHEREAS, the EVOS grant expires September 30, 2003 before anticipated completion of the
EVOS Plan #99304;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
THAT the Kodiak Island Borough requests and supports the extension of the funding to
September 30, 2004 for the implementation of the EVOS Plan #99304.
