Nielse , CMC, Borough Clerk KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 2002 -14 Introduced by: Borough Manager Requested by: Borough Mayor Drafted by: Borough Manager Introduced: 04/18/2002 Adopted: 04/18/2002 A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY SUPPORTING SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 28 ESTABLISHING THE JOINT LEGISLATIVE SALMON INDUSTRY TASK FORCE WHEREAS, the salmon industry has been a mainstay of the Kodiak economy since the late 1800's; and WHEREAS, the salmon industry is under economic attack from farmed salmon producers, our historic markets are being lost and long time harvesters and processors of Alaskan salmon are being forced into bankruptcy due to an inability to compete with subsidized farm salmon producers using low cost labor; and WHEREAS, there is a need for all stakeholders in the salmon industry to come together to work with policy makers to generate Tong -term effective solutions to the salmon crisis; and WHEREAS, Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 28 would establish a joint legislative salmon industry task force to study and address the problems in the salmon industry and report on necessary changes in process, relationships, and policies in order to regain our market share; and WHEREAS, at the recent Alaska Fish Summit, held in Kodiak by Governor Knowles and Senator Stevens, fishermen and processors met with elected officials and supported Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 28; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly strongly supports Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 28 establishing a joint legislative salmon industry task force and urges adoption in its entirety.
