A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS OF SENATOR FRED ZHAROFF TO OUR COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1978, 1980,
and 1982; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was elected to serve in the Alaska Senate in 1984, 1988, 1992; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was known as a legislator who fought hard for his constituents in
Kodiak; and
WHEREAS, in every dealing Senator Zharoff considered what was best for the people he
represented and the state in general; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was instrumental in helping bringing about the Near Island Bridge,
Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium, Terror Lake Hydroelectric project, Fisheries Industrial Technology
Center, and a number of other Kodiak capital projects; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was an ardent supporter of social service programs in our community;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was a staunch advocate of the commercial fishing industry; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff served his community well by serving in the Alaska National Guard,
three years active and five years in the reserve; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff taught in the Kodiak Island Borough School District for 17 years; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff also served on the Kodiak Electric Association Board; and
WHEREAS, Senator Zharoff was also active in the Kodiak Native Community serving on the Board
of Directors for Koniag, Leisnoi, and Kodiak Area Native Association;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that
the Kodiak Island Borough recognizes the efforts of Senator Fred Zharoff for all Kodiak Island
residents, that they are grateful for having such a community minded person represent residents in
many different arenas and that we send our condolences to the family of Senator Fred Zharoff.
