A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
APPLAUDING SENATOR TED STEVENS FOR HIS TENACIOUS
SUPPORT OF ALASKA FISHERIES
WHEREAS, the federal government crafted a plan to protect Steller sea lions in response to
a lawsuit filed by environmental groups; and
WHEREAS, that plan, which is based on speculation rather than proven science, will drastically
restrict Alaska's fisheries, resulting in a detrimental effect to Alaska's economy; and
WHEREAS, Senator Ted Stevens aggressively sought a reasonable and fair solution for Alaskan
fisheries affected by the federal restrictions; and
WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, Alaska's groundfish fisheries
will occur under the pre- injunction 2000 regulations through at least March 15, 2001; and
WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, an independent scientific
review will be conducted and adequate funding will be provided for a comprehensive study of
the various causes of the Steller sea lion decline; and
WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, $30 million will be distributed
to Alaskan fishing communities to help mitigate losses that have already occurred;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
that we herewith express our sincere gratitude for the important role Senator Ted Stevens has
played in promoting the welfare of the citizens of our community and our state.
