2001-10 Senator Stevens Support of FisheriesKODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 2001 -10 Introduced by: Deputy Mayor Heinrichs Requested by: Assembly Introduced: 02/15/2001 Adopted: 02/15/2001 A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH APPLAUDING SENATOR TED STEVENS FOR HIS TENACIOUS SUPPORT OF ALASKA FISHERIES WHEREAS, the federal government crafted a plan to protect Steller sea lions in response to a lawsuit filed by environmental groups; and WHEREAS, that plan, which is based on speculation rather than proven science, will drastically restrict Alaska's fisheries, resulting in a detrimental effect to Alaska's economy; and WHEREAS, Senator Ted Stevens aggressively sought a reasonable and fair solution for Alaskan fisheries affected by the federal restrictions; and WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, Alaska's groundfish fisheries will occur under the pre- injunction 2000 regulations through at least March 15, 2001; and WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, an independent scientific review will be conducted and adequate funding will be provided for a comprehensive study of the various causes of the Steller sea lion decline; and WHEREAS, through the successful efforts of Senator Stevens, $30 million will be distributed to Alaskan fishing communities to help mitigate losses that have already occurred; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that we herewith express our sincere gratitude for the important role Senator Ted Stevens has played in promoting the welfare of the citizens of our community and our state.
