A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH URGING
THE ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE TO ADOPT ITS SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
NO. 18 REQUESTING EXXON CORPORATION TO PAY ALL CLAIMANTS FOR
COURT - ORDERED DAMAGES RESULTING FROM THE EXXON VALDEZ OIL SPILL
WHEREAS, on March 24, 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Va /dez grounded on Bligh Reef
in Prince William Sound, resulting in a spill of 11,000,000 gallons of North Slope crude
oil along Alaska's shoreline; and
WHEREAS, the oil spill affected many communities, including the Kodiak Island
Borough, by causing long -term damage to commercial, subsistence, and sport
fisherman, tourism operators; subsistence gathers; large and small business; and
others in the area; and
WHEREAS, a decade after the oil spill, claimants are still waiting for payment of
punitive damages; and
WHEREAS, the Exxon Corporation must make good on its promise to make Alaska
whole again and pay its debt to the people of Alaska as prescribed by the court;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the Alaska State Legislature is urged to adopt its Senate Joint
Resolution No. 18 requesting Exxon Corporation to pay all claimants for court - ordered
damages resulting from the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH that copies of this resolution shall be sent to Governor Knowles
and the Twenty -First Alaska State Legislature.
