RESOLUTION NO. 99 -08
A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
URGING THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO PURCHASE
SURPLUS ALASKAN PINK SALMON FOR AID PACKAGES TO THE BALKANS
WHEREAS, there remains much conflict in today's world; and

WHEREAS, the United States has undeniably become the world's greatest military
and economic power; and
WHEREAS, the recent conflict in the Balkans between the Serbian and Albanian
peoples has involved NATO; and
WHEREAS, as a member of NATO, the United States is now involved in the conflict;
and
WHEREAS, the conflict in the Balkans has produced hundreds of thousands of
refugees; and
WHEREAS, the United States, along with other NATO members, is now caring for
many of those refugees; and
WHEREAS, most of the refugees are Albanian and, being a people of the Adriatic Sea,
have included seafood in their diets for thousands of years; and
WHEREAS, food purchased by the U.S.D.A. must come from surplus supplies; and
WHEREAS, recent record runs of Alaskan pink salmon have produced a surplus of
both canned and pouched product; and
WHEREAS, in the coming weeks the United States will help feed the Albanian
refugees;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the United States government is strongly encouraged to purchase
surplus Alaskan canned and pouched pink salmon to be included in food aid packages
to the Balkans.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH that copies of this resolution be sent to the President of the United
States Bill Clinton, U.S. Senators Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski, U.S.
Representative Don Young, and the Governor of the State of Alaska Tony Knowles.
