A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
URGING GOVERNOR KNOWLES TO ATTEND THE
NATIONAL OCEAN CONFERENCE
WHEREAS, a great deal of attention is focused on the Ocean and the multitude of
activities that occur in, on, and around the Ocean; and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough is a community whose very existence depends
upon what happens in, on, and around the Ocean; and
WHEREAS, the state of Alaska has more coastline than the entire "lower 48 states ",
and the fishing industry is Alaska's largest employer as well as a major contributor to
the Alaskan economy; and
WHEREAS, many areas of the world have abused the Ocean and its resources while
Alaskans have practiced sound conservative measures and have maintained thriving
healthy resources stock and a solid fishing industry; and
WHEREAS, there is concern that national policy will not recognize Alaska's successful
management of the Ocean and its resources and will adopt provisions harmful to the
Alaskan economy; and
WHEREAS, there is a National Oceans Conference scheduled for June of 1998 in
Monterey, California to develop national policy concerning the Ocean;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that Governor Knowles is urged to attend the National Oceans Conference,
relate Alaska's success story, and educate the Conference delegates to adopt policies
that allow Alaska to continue to wisely manager what is occurring in, on, and around
the Ocean in Alaskan waters.
