A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
URGING THE OCEAN STUDIES BOARD /NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL
OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES TO VISIT KODIAK ISLAND
WHEREAS, fisheries are the lifeblood of the social and economic health of the Kodiak
Archipelago; and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough has a strong interest in the health of the fishing
industry in the Gulf of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the Ocean Studies Board /National Research Council of the National
Academy of Sciences is conducting research on the effects of Transferable Fishing
Quotas and has not as yet visited any fishing community in Alaska; and
WHEREAS, Transferable Fishing Quotas have had a significant impact on the people
of Kodiak Island;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that Senator Ted Stevens and Representative Don Young respectfully be
asked to request the Ocean Studies Board to visit Kodiak Island to interview the
affected people of the community.
