A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONTINUED FUNDING
AND OPERATION OF KODIAK COLLEGE BY THE
UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA ANCHORAGE
WHEREAS, Kodiak is geographically isolated from the Anchorage area and road
system; and
WHEREAS, Kodiak residents have the need and desire to increase their knowledge
and technical skills to enhance their personal and professional development, or to
acquire an academic degree or vocational certificate; and
WHEREAS, Kodiak residents are culturally diverse in many ways, including language,
and have the need and desire to learn the English language or a world language; and
WHEREAS, Kodiak residents have a desire to raise their standard of living and improve
their economic situation as a result of higher education; and
WHEREAS, a quality, trained labor force adds to the economic well being of a
community; and
WHEREAS, existing employers and developing industries rely on availability of a
skilled labor force; and
WHEREAS, the average worker will change careers several times during life; and
WHEREAS, Welfare to Work initiatives are moving families from a life of dependence
to self- sufficiency;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the University of Alaska Board of Regents is urged to continue to fund
Kodiak College at a level to allow it to continue its important role as an extended
college of the University of Alaska Anchorage and to maintain its accreditation by the
Commission of Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH that a copy of this resolution be submitted to the Alaska Board of
Regents, the State of Alaska Legislature, and the Governor of the State of Alaska.
