A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT
TO INCLUDE ALASKAN CANNED PINK SALMON
IN AID PACKAGES TO NORTH KOREA
WHEREAS, there exists on Kodiak Island, Alaska an economy based on the
harvesting of salmon that is thousands of years old; and
WHEREAS, the prices paid to fishermen statewide are so low that many fishermen
will be unable to fish, particularly in the pink salmon fishery; and
WHEREAS, a major part of the Alaskan pink salmon fishery still produces a canned
product; and
WHEREAS, there also exists a nation known as North Korea; and
WHEREAS, North Korea is in a state- or near -state of famine; and
WHEREAS, North Korea has a well - developed military; and
WHEREAS, that military potentially threatens Alaska's two main trading partners,
Japan and South Korea; and
WHEREAS, the United States government is considering an aid package to North
Korea that may be tied to a "stand down" of their military forces; and
WHEREAS, many homes in North Korea allegedly lack refrigeration; and
WHEREAS, canned pink salmon would be an ideal protein source for the people of
North Korea; and
WHEREAS, a famine in North Korea would be something that Alaskans and
Americans can do something about;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH that the United States Government is strongly encouraged to purchase
Alaskan canned pink salmon to be included in any food aid package that goes to
North Korea.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH that copies of this resolution be sent to U.S. Senators Ted
Stevens and Frank Murkowski, U.S. Representative Don Young, the Governor of the
State of Alaska Tony Knowles, and the President of the United States Bill Clinton.
