1997-19 Opposing House Bill No. 68KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 97 -19 Introduced by: Assemblymember Abell Requested by: Assemblymember Abell Drafted: Assemblymember Abell Introduced: 05/01/97 Adopted: 05/01/97 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING HOUSE BILL NO. 68 AND SENATE BILL NO. 169 ALLOWING TWELVE HOUR WORK DAYS WITHOUT OVERTIME AFTER EIGHT HOURS WHEREAS, Alaska's economy is strengthened by the liveable wages of its workforce; and WHEREAS, that workforce depends heavily on livable wages that are supplemented by overtime pay after eight (8) hours; and WHEREAS, the workforce in part is seasonal with a shorter work year which, without supplemental overtime, would put many families at economic risk; and WHEREAS, the passage of these two bills disallowing overtime would migrate exemptions to other industries, and a loss of real dollars and real income would have an overwhelming negative effect on our fragile economies; and WHEREAS, the loss of real income would be devastating to some 170,000 non- exempt working Alaskans now allowed overtime; and WHEREAS, this Toss of real income would have a real negative impact on our communities and especially those communities that depend largely on good wages for survival; and WHEREAS, lost income would equate to more families at risk income levels that would require supplemental government aid and be counter - productive to relieving the rolls of welfare; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that the passage of House Bill 68 and Senate Bill 169, which permits special exemptions of AS 23.10.060 to allow twelve (12) hour work days without overtime pay, is opposed. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that the legislators, governor, and commissioners of the state of Alaska are encouraged to not support passage of these bills.
