1997-11 Veterans Memorial ConstructionKODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 97 -11 Introduced by: Mayor Selby Requested by: Kodiak Kiwanis Club Drafted: Mayor Selby Introduced: 03/06/97 Adopted: 03/06/97 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A VETERANS MEMORIAL AS PROPOSED BY THE KODIAK KIWANIS CLUB WHEREAS, Kodiak was very heavily impacted during World War II with the presence of military forces; and WHEREAS, the remaining historical structures and the impact of the presence of a large military force on Kodiak during World War II is still present today and is featured at the Fort Abercrombie State Park and the existence of the United States Coast Guard Base, among others; and WHEREAS, there are numerous other bunkers and remaining effects such as the runway at Chiniak and numerous pill boxes and other artifacts from the World War II presence on Kodiak Island; and WHEREAS, many of Kodiak's residents are veterans who served in the military forces during World War II or other U. S. Military engagements; and WHEREAS, the State of Alaska Department of Transportation is beginning to construct the Gibson Cover Project, which will remove a large amount of rock from the Deadman's Curve area of the State highway between the City of Kodiak and the airport; and WHEREAS, incorporated into this construction project is a large viewing area to be located on what is known as Deadman's Curve; and WHEREAS, there will be space available in the viewing area to incorporate a Veterans Memorial into this project; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that the Commissioner for the Alaska Department of Transportation is urged to incorporate the Veterans Memorial into the Gibson Cove Highway Project and provide the funding to accomplish the construction of the Veterans Memorial as proposed by the Kodiak Kiwanis Club.
