1997-03 Board of Fish AppointmentKODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 97 -03 Introduced by: Assemblymember Milligan Requested by: Assemblymember Milligan Drafted: Assemblymember Milligan Introduced: 01/02/97 Amended: 01/02/97 Adopted: 01/02/97 A RESOLUTION URGING THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF ALASKA TO APPOINT WALTER SARGENT TO THE ALASKA BOARD OF FISH WHEREAS, there exists a Board of Fish that the State of Alaska uses to formulate and set policy for fishery issues; and WHEREAS, the community of Kodiak has not been represented, beginning with the Mickel administration and continuing into the Knowles administration; and WHEREAS, the community of Kodiak has been a major fishing port since before the dawn of history; and WHEREAS, it has been well documented by many different, very credible sources that the pre- contact population of Kodiak was considerably higher than the current population; and WHEREAS, the unique nature of Kodiak salmon runs was a contributing factor in the formation of the various cultures that have resided on Kodiak Island over the years; and WHEREAS, in recent years, Kodiak has been in the top five ports nationally for poundage produced; and WHEREAS, in recent years, Kodiak has been in the top five ports nationally for ex- vessel value; and WHEREAS, even though Kodiak is a world class port and has not been represented on the aforementioned Board of Fish; and WHEREAS, the fishing community of Kodiak is very diverse; and WHEREAS, the fishing community of Kodiak has decided to support the appointment of Walter Sargent to the Board of Fish; and Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska Resolution No. 97 -03 Page 1 of 2 WHEREAS, Walter Sargent has a commercial fishing record that spans more than four decades; and WHEREAS, Governor Knowles has a unique opportunity to rectify this great inequity to our State; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH that the Governor of the State of Alaska is encouraged to appoint Walter Sargent to the Alaska Board of Fish.
