Stevens Drafted by: Borough Attorney Introduced: 06/05/97 Public Hearing: 06/19/97 Amended: 06/19/97 Adopted: 06/19/97 AN ORDINANCE INCREASING THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH BOARD OF EDUCATION FROM FIVE TO SEVEN MEMBERS AND AMENDING KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH CODE OF ORDINANCES TITLE 2 ADMINISTRATION AND PERSONNEL TO ADD CHAPTER 2.50 BOARD OF EDUCATION WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education has had five members since its inception; and WHEREAS, Alaska Statute 14.12.030 provides that the assembly, as the governing body of the borough, may by ordinance, concurred in by a majority of the district school board, provide for a school board of seven members; and WHEREAS, the economic and cultural diversity of the Kodiak Island Borough has been expanding in recent years; and WHEREAS, a seven member board would more accurately represent the economic and cultural diversity of the Kodiak Island Borough; and WHEREAS, a seven member board would provide a vehicle for broader community participation; and WHEREAS, a seven member board would increase citizen involvement to ensure that essential educational opportunities are provided to the citizens of the Kodiak Island Borough; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH THAT: Section 1: Section 2 of this ordinance is of a general and permanent nature and shall become a part of the Kodiak Island Borough Code of Ordinances. Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska Ordinance No. 97 -08 Page 1 of 2 Section 2: Title 2 Administration and Personnel is hereby amended by adding Chapter 2.50 Board of Education: Chapter 2.50 BOARD OF EDUCATION Sections: 2.50.010 Membership. 2.50.020 School board seats. 2.50.030 Vacancies. 2.50.010 Membership. The Kodiak Island Borough school district shall have a school board of seven (7) members. 2.50.020 School board seats. Each school board member shall be elected at large. The terms shall be for three (3) years and until a successor takes office. 2.50.030 Vacancies. If a vacancy occurs on the school board, the remaining members shall within thirty (30) calendar days fill the vacancy. The person selected shall serve until the next regular election when a successor shall be elected to serve the balance of the term. Section 3: The two (2) new members of the school board shall be elected at the October 7, 1997, regular municipal election. One (1) member shall be elected to a one -year (1) term and one member shall be elected to a three -year term (3). All terms thereafter shall be for three (3) years. Section 4: This ordinance is not effective unless it is concurred in by a majority of the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education.
