AN ORDINANCE OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY PLACING THE
QUESTION OF THE ADOPTION OF A HOTEL -MOTEL SALES TAX ON THE OCTOBER 7, 1986
BALLOT.
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has beco , ncreasingly
aware of the importance of a diversified economic base to th ()T ability and
well being of the Kodisk Island Borough, and
WHEREAS, natural scenic attractions and avails i s outdoor sporting
activities sere to attract tourists to Kodiak, and
WHEREAS, increased development of the tour 4t /dustry will further
the objective of diversifying Kodiak Island's econo, /base, and
WHEREAS, the Assembly desires to implemitex measures which will
generate the additional revenue needed to finaryceii proved tourist facilities,
services, and attractions and which will impose 5.1 bstantiel portions of that
tax burden on the tourists who will benefi pi those facilities and services,
and
WHEREAS, Alaska Statute 29.45.850 /provides that a borough may levy
and collect a sales tax not exceeding six percent on sales, rents and on
services provided in the borough an erfiptions may be granted ordinance, and
WHEREAS, the City of K levied s 5 percent transient room
sales tax within the City of Kod liv./
NOW, THEREFORE, BE 17 ORDINED by the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
that the following questionn�sJhhhaalV be placed on the October 7, 1986 Kodiak
Island Borough ballot for tlrt�g1onsideration of all registered voters:
Shall the (piAk Island Borough adopt sales tax powers
and levy a sales t,ix on transient hotel -motel room rentals
equal to fiv anent (5 %) of the room rental.and exempt all
other sales As and services provided in the Borough.

AND BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that the City of Kodiak will be au,thoriz•d
to continue to levy and collect sales tax within the city limits of t Ci+
Kodiak.
