AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 17 OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH CODE,
PERTAINING TO ZONING, BY REVISING CHAPTER 17.60, SIGNS.
The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly Ordains that:
SECTION 1: Chapter 17.60, Signs, is hereby revised in its entirety to read as
follows:

SIGNS
Description and intent

Industrial district
17.60.010 Description and intent. The intent of this chapter is to per-
mit signs that will not, by their reason, size, location, construction, or
manner of display, endanger the public health, safety, or general welfare. It
is further intended that this chapter will regulate signs in such a way as to
support and compliment the purposes and intents of this Title.
17.60.020 Permit required. A building permit shall be obtained from the
Building Official prior to the installation of any sign. Signs containing four
(4) square feet of area or less are exempt from the permit requirement.
17.60.030 Residential districts. In all residential districts the follow-
ing signs are permitted:
A. One sign on a dwelling unit, not exceeding four (4) square feet
in area for the purpose of identifying the name of the occupant and his home
occupation;
B. One sign on a dwelling unit, not exceeding six (6) square feet
in area, for the purpose of advertising the sale or lease of a building or pre-
mises;
C. One sign, not exceeding twenty -five (25) square feet in area,
for the purpose of identifying multiple - family dwellings, hotels, clubs, lodges,
public and semi - public institutions and similar uses;
D. One sign, not exceeding thirty (30) square feet in area, for
the purpose of identifying nonconforming commercial uses;
E. One sign, not exceeding twenty -five (25) square feet in area,
for a church, public or charitable institution;
F. One sign, not exceeding one hundred (100) square feet in area,
for the purpose of advertising a tract development or housing project of at
least two acres in size. Such a sign shall not be permitted for more than one
year;
G. The signs in this section shall be mounted flat against a build-
ing or at least ten (10) feet back from the front lot line; and
H. No illuminated or flashing signs are permitted in any residential

17.60.040 Business district. In the Business district, one sign, not
exceeding twenty -five (25) percent of the area of a building face fronting on
a public street, is permitted. In the event more than one business enterpri'
is housed in the same building, one sign per business is permitted but the t
' sign area involved shall not exceed twenty -five (25) percent of the area of tr
building's face. No flashing signs are permitted within 300 feet of any
residential district unless shielded from the residential district.
17.60.050 Industrial district. In an Industrial district, one sign, not
exceeding twenty -five (25) percent of the area of a building face fronting on a
1 public street, is permitted, provided:
A. That it shall be on the same lot as the main building or use;
B. That it shall not extend more than fourteen (14) feet above the
ground;
C. No flashing signs are permitted within 300 feet of any resident
l ial district unless shielded from the residential district; and
D. Waterfront industries may also have one sign on the seaward side!
, of the building to identify the premises to vessels.
( SECTION 2: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect upon passage and
adoption.
