KODIAK ISLAND BOROU.
RESOLUTION NO. 83 -144 -R
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
SUPPORTING KING CRAB RESEARCH AND AQUACULTURE.
WHEREAS, the harvest and processing of king crab has
been a major industry in Kodiak and Western Alaska area, and
WHEREAS, the Port of Kodiak has had ex- vessel values
of king crab as high as 73 million dollars, and
WHEREAS, the recent decline of Alaskan king crab stocks
has lead to the closure of the king crab fishery in most areas of
the State, and
WHEREAS, the closure has in part, resulted in signifi-
cant economic impact in villages of the Kodiak Island Borough,
if
the City of Kodiak and the City of Unalaska, and
!I WHEREAS, the reason for the decline and collapse of
this valuable fishery resource is unknown and has not been well
researched, and
WHEREAS, the proposed Fishery Technology Center could
provide the necessary salt water systems and aquaria for crab
research, and experimental aquaculture of king crab if funding
was provided, and
WHEREAS, the Division of Fisheries Rehabilitation, En-
Ilhancement and Development of the Department of Fish and Game has

statutory responsibility (A.S. 16.05.092) to do all things neces-
sary to insure perpetual and increasing production and use of the
! food resources of Alaskan waters and continental shelf areas
through rehabilitation, enhancement and development programs, and
WHEREAS, the State's king crab research surveys should
be sufficiently expanded and funded to monitor the existing king
crab stocks.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Kodiak Island
Borough Assembly strongly supports the funding of king crab re-
search and aquaculture by the State of Alaska.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution
