1983-118 Commending The Crew Of The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station For Outstanding Service Rendered.9 '� 1 A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY COMMENDING THE CREW OF THE U. S. COAST GUARD AIR STATION FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE RENDERED. WHEREAS, the U. S. Coast Guard is the oldest seagoing organization of our nation founded on August 4, 1790, and WHEREAS, the U. 5. Coast Guard has subsequently taken on a multitude of tasks which now include search and rescue, maintaining aids to navigation, law enforcement, oceanographic research, ice breaking, merchant marine and boating safety and readiness, and WHEREAS, the Coast Guard has been established in Kodiak since 1947 ..,providing service to citizens and the local fishing community on numerous occasions, and WHEREAS, an example of the readiness to serve the local community II I was again exhibited on Sunday, September 4, 1983 when a U. S. Coast Guard Air Station helicopter crew braved gale force winds and high seas to pluck three surviviors including an apparently dead child from an overturned crabbing vessel near Larsen Bay, and WHEREAS, in order to get low enough to reach the victims the rescue helicopter had to hover partially submerged, taking care that the surging waves did not wash over the engine knocking it out, and WHEREAS, after rescuing the victims from waves which flooded the !interior of the helicopter, the Air Station crew and medical staff applied H ardio- pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) starting the child's heart again. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly that in recognition of this outstanding service as well as in many other instances too numerous to mention here hereby commends the U. S. Coast Guard Air Station under the command of Captain George Gaul for the dedication and services rendered to the citizens of Kodiak.
