RESOLUTION NO. 68 - 40 -
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH SUPPORTING JOINT
MILITARY CIVIL CSE OF IHE AIRPORT AT THE KODIAK NAVALBASE.
2 WHEREAS, air transportation is a necessary part of
3 development of Kodiak, and,
4 WHEREAS, general aviation consisting of itinerant pri-
5
vate aircraft can greatly increase the tourist potential and
6
economy of our area, and,
7
WHEREAS, the local air taxi operators must have a safe
8
9 adequate landing field near their offices and repair facilities,
10 .
11 WHEREAS, the present municipal strip is narrow, short,
12 steeply sloped for half of its length and is located in an area
13 of prevailing crosswinds, and,
WHEREAS, the city strip has no control of traffic, no
lights or instrument landing facilities and lies isolated 135
miles from the last lighted, controlled civil runway, and
WHEREAS, the safety of all pilots and airplanes utilizing
the city strip is thereby jeopardized by the hazards surrounding
the field, and the field itself, and,
WHEREAS, the Federal Aviation Agency and State of Alaska
refuse to finance improvements on the hazardous city strip, and
WHEREAS, the Navy has an airport which lies 6 miles from
the City of Kodiak and which can be utilized for all aviation
facilities, and
WHEREAS, there is no other logical location available
for construction of a major all- around airport facility without
expenditures of tens of millions of dollars in access and

WHEREAS, the joint use of this Naval Air Station would
alloq.complete utilization of a now under utilized facility.
1 1 -NOW, THEREFORE, BE II RESOLVED by the Kodiak Island
2 j Borough, that it supports the efforts of the Airport Improvements
3 Committee of the Chamber of Commerce through its chairman Blake
4
McKinley to work through the Federal Aviation Agency, the Depart-
ment of Defense, tire Navy, the State of Alaska and other agencies
6
7 as may be necessary to receive support for the utilization of the
8 existing Naval Airport for joint use of all civilian and military
g aircraft operations.
