A RESOLUTION OF KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY REQUESTING
GOVERNOR JAY HAMMOND DECLARE A STATE OF EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO
THE KARLUK SPIT EROSION PROBLEM
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has caused to
be made surveys estimating the extent of damage incurred to the
Karluk sand spit in the community of Karluk, Kodiak Island Borough;
and
WHEREAS, specific reports by the Borough Engineer and
representative of the United States Army Corp of Engineers indicate
severe and extended damage to the spit creating significant incon-
venience and economic hardship for the village of Karluk, Kodiak
Island Borough; and
WHEREAS, the most recent investigation of the spit's
erosion damage by the Borough Engineer, Rolland Jones, is attached,
herewith, and made a part of this resolution as technical evidence
of the extent of damage requiring technical and financial resources
exceeding the capacities of the Kodiak Island Borough and the De-
partment of Community and Regional Affairs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly does hereby request that Governor Jay Hammond declare the
Karluk sand spit erosion problem as a civil emergency requiring
the commitment of significant resources by the State of Alaska
and United States Army Corp of Engineers.
