RESOLUTION NUMBER 75 -23 -R
A RESOLUTION OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH ENDORSING AND ADOPTING THE PROPOSAL OF THE KODIAK HERITAGE
MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE CENTER
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island Borough was designated as a
Bicentennial Community in 1974, and
WHEREAS, as such, the Borough Mayor appointed a
Bicentennial Commission, and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Bicentennial Commission is
to encourage community participation in the celebration of our
Nation's 200th Birthday, and since the Bicentennial program
philosophy emphasizes a grassroots approach to involvement,
individuals and organizations are encouraged to participate in a
manner most appropriate to their community, and
WHEREAS, the history of Kodiak and Alaska's beginnings
is embodied in Erskine House, Alaska's oldest and most important
surviving structure from the Russian period, and
Because of its great historic value the Erskine House
and its site was chosen by the National Bicentennial Commission
as the Meetinghouse for the State of Alaska, and
In order to preserve the culture and traditions of
historical Kodiak from the pre- Russian period through recent
history a Meetinghouse Program has been proposed. This program
will provide additional meeting space and museum display space
and encompasses all three of the Bicentennial objectives, Heritage,
Horizons and Festival,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that full support and
endorsement is given by the Assembly of the Kodiak Island Borough
to the planned KODIAK HERITAGE MUSEUM AND ARCHIVE CENTER.
