1995-09 Supporting Continued Level Funding for the Alaska Marine Highway System.KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 95 -09 Introduced by: Assemblymember McFarland Requested by: Assemblymember McFarland Drafted by: Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference Introduced: 04/06/95 Adopted: 04/06/95 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING CONTINUED LEVEL FUNDING FOR THE ALASKA MARINE HIGHWAY SYSTEM WHEREAS, the Southwest segment of the Alaska Marine Highway System is critical to many communities for basic transportation, economic development, and regional interaction; and WHEREAS, reductions in operation funds have a major impact on the entire Alaska Marine Highway System and the individual communities it serves; and WHEREAS, it is imperative to continue the current rebuilding of the system to avoid costly emergency repairs and system disruptions; and WHEREAS, revenues generated by the Alaska Marine Highway System have steadily increased over the past five years; WHEREAS, State funding of the Alaska Marine Highway System operations has decreased over the last few years; and WHEREAS, an ocean class vessel would significantly improve movement of cargo, construction equipment, visitors, and passengers within Southwest Alaska and between Southeast and Southwest Alaska at much needed, cost efficient rates; and WHEREAS, funding for an ocean class vessel was secured from the Alaska State Legislature as part of the 1992 -93 Legislative session; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH THAT funding for the Alaska Marine Highway System operations he increased in fiscal year 1 998 . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Assembly of the Kuc; ,,• Island Borough urges Governor Knowles and the Alaska State Legislature to mair•,, funding for the ocean class vessel, complete its construction, and ensure its operation beginning in 1997.
