A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING CONTINUED FULL FUNDING OF THE
FISHERY INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY CENTER
WHEREAS, the Fishery Industrial Technology Center (FITC) was established by the
University of Alaska to conduct applied research in the fisheries for food
technology and harvesting research; and
WHEREAS, the FITC has made significant contributions to both the processing
industry and the fishing industry in the relatively short time it has
existed; and
WHEREAS, continued development of this applied research is critical to Alaska's
economic future in fisheries; and
WHEREAS, a strong viable university system must have a strong applied research
ability such as the FITC; and
WHEREAS, the FITC has become the focal point for joint research efforts by the
National Marine Fisheries Service, the Alaska Department of Fish and
Game and the FITC staff, which has greatly enhanced the productivity
and opportunities for all three agencies; and
WHEREAS, the additional office space and laboratory space, which is ready to go to
construction design in December 1994, will only increase the
cooperation and coordination of all three agencies; and
WHEREAS, the University of Alaska has the opportunity to have the premier fisheries
research center for the North Pacific located in Kodiak, which is one of
the richest estuaries in the world;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH THAT the University of Alaska is urged to reestablish the Fishery Industrial
Technology Center as a high priority in the University system and assure full and
increased funding toward the full potential of the Center.

Fishery Industrial Technology Center in the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.
