DAVID HERRNSTEEN BRIDGE WHEREAS, R. David Herrnsteen lived in Kodiak for twe y -six years and worked tirelessly during that time for the benefit of . oth the Kodiak community and the Alaskan fishing industry; and WHEREAS, R. David Herrnsteen was a leader in tr - Kodiak community serving on the Kodiak Island Borough Assembl from 1979 to 1981, as Kodiak Island Borough Mayor from 1981 o 1983, and on the Kodiak Island School Board from 1987 to 199 , and WHEREAS, R. David Herrnsteen was a vi force in the Alaskan fishing community, serving as a member of the . sheries Industrial Technology Center Policy Committee from 1982 to 992, as an officer of the United Fishermen's Marketing Association f . m 1979 to 1992, as a member of the Alaska Coastal Policy Council ' 1983, as vice - president of United Fishermen of Alaska in 1973, as .mmissioner of the Alaska Commission on the Law of the Sea from 1 • 2 to 1974, and as a member of the Kodiak College Fisheries Institut Steering Committee for many years; and WHEREAS, R. David Herr - steen created consensus and built bridges between people of diverse ' terests and outlook in the many committees on which he served, a r . particularly as president of the Oil /Fisheries Group of Alaska from 1 ' :5 to 1986, as co- chairman of the Alaska Department of Fish and :me Kodiak Shrimp Study Group from 1974 to 1976, and as a me '.er of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Kodiak Groundfish C. mittee from 1987 to 1992; and WHERFAS_ R. David Herrnsteen devoted hic life to the betterment of the comm and the fishing industry by his participation on numerous other committees that influenced state and federal policy and legislation; and Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska Resolution No -94 -08 Page 1 of 2 9 WHEREAS, long term public recognition of an individual who gave so much to the Kodiak Island community is appropriate and a fitting tribute to the spirit of public participation; and WHEREAS, the bridge linking Kodiak Island and Near Island has never been officially named and would be an appropriate symbolic memorial to a man who bridged fishing concerns and community concerns so well; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH: Section 1: ATTEST: Respectfully request that the Alaska Department of Transportation name the bridge which connects Kodiak Island and Near Island the R.
