A RESOLUTION URGING THE ALASKA STATE LEGISLATURE TO REMOVE
THE ALASKA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOUNDATION FUND FROM
CONSIDERATION FOR REAPPROPRIATION
WHEREAS, the Alaska State Legislature established the Alaska Science and
Technology Foundation and provided it with endowment funds to
provide for scientific research and application of technology
demonstration projects to be conducted throughout the State of Alaska;
and
WHEREAS, this program has already resulted in some significant projects advancing
scientific research and the application of technology to develop Alaska's
economic base; and
WHEREAS, the continued emphasis on scientific research and the application of
technology is critical to Alaska's economy as oil funds are diminished
and other sectors of the economy must pick up the slack in order to
maintain Alaska's economic base; and
WHEREAS, many ideas that address economic development in Alaska's rural areas
cannot be funded by regular financial methods, which makes another
funding mechanism such as the Alaska Science and Technology
Foundation Fund mandatory for the future of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska State Legislature has been reviewing all funding sources to
determine where funds may be available for reappropriation; and
WHEREAS, the funding for the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation Fund has
been identified as potentially being available for reappropriation; and
WHEREAS, the demise of the fund would eliminate the intent and purpose of the
legislature at the time they established this fund;
