1992-08 Supporting the Chamber of Commerce's Application for an Economic Development Grant.KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 92 -08 Introduced by: Requested by: Drafted by: Introduced: Adopted: Mayor Selby Chamber of Commerce Chamber of Commerce 03/19/92 03/19/92 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE'S APPLICATION FOR AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANT WHEREAS, presently nearly all of the Alaska's fishery production is minimally processed and then exported south to the lower 48 or overseas where that production is then further processed into consumer ready form; and WHEREAS, the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference contracted for a feasibility study on the potential of value -added processing in the southwest Alaska region; and WHEREAS, the draft report of that feasibility study indicated a high probability of success for a value -added processing plan in Kodiak; and WHEREAS, the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce, the Kodiak Electric Association, the City of Kodiak, and the Kodiak Island Borough wish to promote the development of value -added processing in Kodiak; and WHEREAS, value -added processing would provide steady employment throughout the year and stabilize the wild fluctuations in employment levels in Kodiak's processing labor force; and WHEREAS, a new plant and related infrastructure would enhance the tax base of Kodiak and improve the overall economic conditions in the community; and WHEREAS, prior to being able to specifically market any value -added processing opportunities in Kodiak, a feasibility study must be conducted; Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska Resolution No. 92 -08 Page 1 of 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH THAT: Section 1: Section 2: PASSED AND APPROVED THIS 19th DAY OF MARCH, 1992. ATTEST: Borough Clerk the Board of Directors of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce are urged to authorize Chamber staff to apply for a technical assistance grant from the State of Alaska, Department of Commerce and Economic Development. the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce is urged to solicit support and funding for the feasibility study from the Kodiak Electric Association and the State of Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development.
