KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH
RESOLUTION NO. 92 -07
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING KING CRAB REHABILITATION
the harvest and processing of king crab has been a major industry in
Kodiak and Western Alaska area; and
the Port of Kodiak has had ex- vessel values of king crab as high as 73
million dollars; and
the closure has, in part, resulted in significant economic impact in
villages of the Kodiak Island Borough, the City of Kodiak, and the
Pribilofs; and
the reason for the decline and collapse of this valuable fishery resource
is unknown and has not been well researched; and
king crab rehabilitation by culture is possible with current research
knowledge from Japan and the University of Alaska, Southeast; and
the Fishery Industrial Technology Center could provide the necessary salt
water systems and aquaria for crab research and experimental
aquaculture of king crab if funding was provided; and
the Division of Fisheries Rehabilitation, Enhancement and Development
of the Department of Fish and Game has statutory responsibility (AS
16.05.092) to do all things necessary to ensure perpetual and increasing
production and use of the food resources of Alaskan waters and
continental shelf areas through rehabilitation, enhancement and
development programs; and
the Kodiak Island Borough has a $50,000 contract with the National
Marine Fisheries for a red king crab nursery habitat investigation in three
bays; and
