1991-47 Supporting the Western Alaska Salmon Alliance.Introduced by: Mayor Selby Requested by: SWAMC Drafted by: SWAMC Introduced: 09/19/91 Amended: 09/19/91 Adopted: 09/19/91 KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH RESOLUTION NO. 91-47 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE WESTERN ALASKA SALMON ALLIANCE WHEREAS, Southwestern Alaska Municipal Conference was established and organized in order to promote economic development in Southwest Alaska; and WHEREAS, the primary industry that stimulates economic development in Southwestern Alaska is the salmon fishing industry; and WHEREAS, it is in the economic interest of the fishermen and fishing communities of southwest Alaska to expand the salmon markets; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH: Supports the Western Alaska Salmon Alliance and the following goals and objectives that have been established by the Western Alaska Salmon Alliance: 1. Present current marketing information. 2. Identify new domestic and foreign markets other than Japan. 3. Make available information for processing your own fish. 4. Have a marketing consultant on staff. 5. Emphasis on improving quality. 6. Support legislation which adds a 1 % optional enhanced salmon tax. 7. Pre -season rally building solidarity and presenting information. 8. Send out bi-monthly letter. 9. Improve public image of fishery and product. 10. Encourage membership from all salmon related industries. 11. Question on promoting Alaskan salmon. 12. Utilize ASMI organization. 13. Long term goal to improve infrastructure to move product. 14. Economic study to look at dissemination of the salmon industry profits. 15. Use existing organizations to support goals. 16. Legislation favoring salmon fishing.
