A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING CAPTAIN ERNST M. CUMMINGS,
COMMANDING OFFICER, USCG SUPPORT CENTER KODIAK,
FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AND CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, Captain Ernst M. Cummings is the Commanding Officer of the Support
Center, Kodiak, Alaska, which is the home to nine commands on Kodiak
Island and is the largest operational Coast Guard Base in the world; and
WHEREAS, prior to this assignment, Captain Cummings was the Director of
Professional Development at the Coast Guard Academy and the
Commanding Officer of the Coast Guard Barque EAGLE and has the
distinction of being America's Tall Ship Captain longer than anyone in the
vessel's history; and
WHEREAS, Captain Cummings has been awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star
Medal with combat W", a Navy Commendation Medal with combat W", two
Coast Guard Commendation Medals, a Coast Guard Achievement Medal
and various unit service decorations; and
WHEREAS, Captain Cummings has been an active participant on the Emergency
Services Council, which has been established to provide for the preparation
and implementation of plans for emergency services for the residents and
property within the Kodiak Island Borough in the event of a disaster; and
WHEREAS, Captain Cummings implemented a full scale disaster drill with the
Emergency Services Council to gain valuable information and to test the
effectiveness of Kodiak's emergency plans; and
WHEREAS, Captain Cummings has provided dedicated service to the community
through his efforts on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as
a member of Rotary; and

WHEREAS, Captain Cummings and his wife, Mary, have demonstrated a strong
commitment to the Kodiak community through their involvement in many
community activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH;
Section 1. Captain Ernst M. Cummings is honored for his outstanding contributions to
the Kodiak Island Borough; and
Section 2. A facsimile of this commendation be recorded in the Offices of Senator
Murkowski, Senator Stevens, Representative Young, and Coast Guard
Commandant Kime.
