A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING CAPTAIN MONT J. SMITH,
COMMANDING OFFICER, USCG AIR STATION KODIAK,
FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AND CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH COMMUNITY

WHEREAS, Captain Mont J. Smith is the Commanding Officer of Air Station Kodiak,
Alaska, which is home to 14 aircraft and 350 people; and
WHEREAS, prior to this assignment, Captain Smith acquired a Master of Science
Degree in Aeronautical Systems, was a HH -52A reconnaissance pilot and
sailed aboard USCG polar icebreakers WESTWIND, BURTON ISLAND, and
GLACIER; and
WHEREAS, Captain Smith has nearly 6,000 flying hours of Search and Rescue and law
enforcement duty in the HH -3F, HC-130B/E/H, VC -4A, and the HU -25A,
and helped implement the 1977 Fisheries Conservation and Management
Act in Alaska; and
WHEREAS, Captain Smith has been awarded two Air Medals, the Joint Services
Commendation Medal, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, four Coast
Guard Commedation Ribbons, four Coast Guard Meritorious Unit
Commendation Ribbons, the National Defense Service Medal, the Antarctic
Service Medal, the Arctic Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal,
the Sea Service Ribbon, the Coast Guard Expert Rifle Medal, the Coast
Guard Expert Pistol Medal, and the USCG Special Operation Ribbon; and
WHEREAS, Captain Smith has been a strong supporter of the Emergency Services
Council, as indicated by his contribution of countless hours towards the
successful implementation of a full scale disaster drill to ensure the
effectiveness of Kodiak's emergency plans; and
WHEREAS, Captain Smith has provided dedicated service to the community through his
efforts as a Rotary Club Board member and as a member of the Chamber
of Commerce, Kodiak Island Sportsmen's Association, and the Kodiak
Special Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Captain Smith and his wife, Linda, have demonstrated a strong commitment
to the Kodiak community through their involvement in many community
activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSEMBLY OF THE KODIAK
ISLAND BOROUGH:
Section 1. Captain Mont J. Smith is honored for his outstanding contributions to the
Kodiak Island Borough.
Section 2. A facsimile of this commendation be recorded in the Offices of Senator
Murkowski, Senator Stevens, Representative Young, and Coast Guard
Commandant Kime.
