RESOLUTION NO. 90-64
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING LOCAL APPOINTMENT TO
SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE POSITION
WHEREAS, Judge Roy Madsen is retiring from the bench
after 15 years; and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska has advertised the vacancy
and has received applications from nine candidates including three
qualified Kodiak applicants; and
WHEREAS, each of these three Kodiak applicants are long
time residents of Kodiak, are involved in the community, have been
applying the law to Kodiak legal cases and wish to remain
residents; and
WHEREAS, someone new to Kodiak may not appreciate the
island living nor be familiar with the application of areas of law
that are critical to the Kodiak community; and
WHEREAS, a local practicing member of the legal
profession would have much better knowledge of local issues, such
as fisheries, and would benefit from such insight in the sentencing
of violators of fishery and other laws;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island
Borough Assembly urges careful consideration of local candidates
for the judge position in Kodiak with due consideration to local
knowledge and other qualifications.
