RESOLUTION NO. 90-48
A RESOLUTION URGING INCREASED COAST GUARD FUNDING AND SUPPORT
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District in Alaska is
responsible for enforcement of fisheries regulations for areaS
encompassing the nation's largest fishery resources; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District has jurisdiction
over a geographical expanse larger than that of any other Coast
Guard District; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District monitors
incursions by foreign fishing vessels into U.S. waters of the
Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska; and
WHEREAS, the enforcement of maritime laws can only occur
through the active participation of the U.S. Coast Guard; and
WHEREAS, numerous accidents and deaths have occurred in
the Bristol Bay, the Gulf of Alaska, and the Bering Sea, and will
continue without adequate maritime law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, the budget for the 17th Coast Guard District,
despite the district's increasing responsibilities, is reduced
annually; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District's "can do"
attitude has allowed them to continue their mission despite
inadequate funds and the hazard to their personnel;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island
Resolution No. 90-48

Borough Assembly urges the U.S. Congress to adequately fund the
17th Coast Guard District so it can expand its presence in Bristol
Bay, the Bering Sea, and the Gulf of Alaska to accomplish the
critical missions of marine regulation enforcement and search and
rescue operations, and so that it can support its personnel with
adequate training and equipment.
