A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE APPOINTMENT OF A
KODIAK FISHERMAN TO THE FEDERAL COMMERCIAL FISHING
INDUSTRY VESSEL ADVISORY
COMMITTEE
WHEREAS, the fishing industry is believed to be the most hazard-
il ous industry in America, and
WHEREAS, the federal government, to find methods of decreasing
I i the rate of injury and loss of life, is creating a Commercial Fishing Industry
[Vessel Advisory Committee, and

WHEREAS, Kodiak is the nation's second largest commercial fishing
,port in dollar value of product, and
WHEREAS, over 2,000 vessels moor in the Port of Kodiak, and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak commercial fishing fleet represents vessels of
all sizes and gear types, and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak commercial fishing fleet pursues its livelihood
in all type of weather year round, and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak commercial fishing fleet has demonstrated its
deep concern for the safety of its members, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak fishermen are active proponents of fishing vessel
safety at the local, state and federal level, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak is hone to the nation's largest Coast Guard
facility, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak fishermen have a long history of working closely
with the local Coast Guard facility to increase fishing vessel safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Bor-
ough Assembly fully supports the appointment of at least one fisherman from
the Kodiak fishing industry to at least one of the federal Commercial Fishing
I Advisory Committee's designated fishermen seats.
