1988-69 Supporting Kodiak as the Site of the United States Navy Home Port.A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY
SUPPORTING KODIAK AS THE SITE OF THE U.S. NAVY HOME PORT
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island played a strategic military role during
World War II when as many as 30,000 soldiers, sailors, and marines were
stationed on Kodiak Island; and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island was previously selected for strategic
reasons as the site of a U.S. Navy base; and
WHEREAS, Kodiak offers a year- round, ice -free port; and
WHEREAS, many support facilities already exist on the former Navy
base which is now the U.S. Coast Guard Base - Kodiak, and the U.S. Coast
Guard has offered to share these facilities; and
WHEREAS, many recreational facilities exist on the U.S. Coast
Guard Base and in the City of Kodiak which offer a positive quality of life
for the Navy personnel and families; and
WHEREAS, the cost of infrastructure development to home port two
frigates would probably be Tess than any other port in Alaska;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly of Kodiak, Alaska, hereby respectfully requests the U.S. Navy to
carefully consider Kodiak as the home port for the two proposed Naval
vessels; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough is
prepared to work with the Department of Defense, the Navy Department
and /or any bureau of the Navy which will be instrumental in locating,
establishing, and developing home ports in Alaska.
