RESOLUTION NO. 88 -62 -R
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING COAST GUARD FUNDING
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District in Alaska is responsible
for enforcement of fisheries regulations for the nation's largest fishery
resource; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District has jurisdiction over an
area larger than that of any other Coast Guard District; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District must carry out its search
and rescue missions in some of the most hazardous weather conditions
experienced by any Coast Guard District; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District must also monitor
incursions into U.S. waters by foreign fishing vessels; and
WHEREAS, the budget for the 17th Coast Guard District, despite
the district's increasing responsibilities, is reduced annually; and
WHEREAS, the 17th Coast Guard District's "can do" attitude has
allowed them to continue their mission despite inadequate funds and to the
hazard of their personnel;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly requests the U.S. Congress to adequately fund the 17th Coast Guard
District so it can carry out its mission fully and support its personnel with
adequate training and equipment.
PASSED AND APPROVED THIS 15th DAY OF SEPTEMBER, 1988.
