WHEREAS, roe stripping operations are increasing in Alaska's
bottomfish industry, resulting in the dumping of more than 1.5 million pounds
of pollock in 1987; and
WHEREAS, this is a terrible waste of a public fisheries resource;
WHEREAS, the dumping of these fish carcasses has damaged the
environment of the ocean bottom to the point that other commercial species
have been killed;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly urges the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council to adopt
regulations prohibiting the practice of roe stripping.
