RESOLUTION NO. 88 -31 -R
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH URGING
THE ALASKA STATE SENATE TO PASS HB4 CONTINUING THE
ALASKA WOMEN'S COMMISSION AND RETAINING COMMISSION FUNDING
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission has been in the
forefront of the effort to make the state of Alaska safe for women and
children, by being among the earliest and most active supporters of
domestic violence legislation in 1980, and by continuing a vigilant effort
to maintain adequate funding for the shelters and resource centers
throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission was significant in
securing funding for effective displaced homemaker programs statewide,
helping widowed and divorced homemakers find new resources and
become self- sufficient again; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission was in the vanguard of
organizations leading the effort to secure an educational equity law in
the state of Alaska, ensuring that today's girls and boys are given
every opportunity to develop their full and potential in sports, in
mathematics, in computer technology and in the arts; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission has sponsored nearly
twenty regional women's conferences throughout the state of Alaska, in
communities as diverse as Kodiak, Galena, Kenai, Sitka, Bethel,
Kotzebue, Barrow, and Huslia, in a successful effort to develop and
recognize the leadership and talent possessed by the women in the rural
areas of the state; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission has been one of the
most productive and cost effective agencies in state government during
its ten year history, issuing thousands of educational publications and
research reports each and every year; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission is an essential service
of state government, helping ensure that economic development affects
every portion of our population, especially single parents, working
parents and those at the lowest end of the salary scale; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Women's Commission is in a wind - down year,
and must be reauthorized by passage of HB4 if it is to continue beyond
June 30, 1988:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Assembly of the
Kodiak Island Borough:
Section 1. That the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly urges the
State ego complete its deliberations on HB4 as quickly as possible.
Section 2. That HBO be passed in an unamended version,

retain its independent status.
Section 3. That the Senate and House approve an adequate
budget to enable the Commission to continue its work.

Section 4. That the clerk is directed to send copies of this
resolution to t e Honorable Governor Cowper; Kris Callahan, Director of
the Alaska Women's Commission; the State Senate HESS and Finance
Committee members: Senators Fischer, Josephson, Jones, Kerttula,
Fanning, Halford, Binkley, Uehling, Duncan, Zharoff, Hensley; and to
Representative Davidson.
