PROPOSED KODIAK NATIVE CORPORATION LAND EXCHANGES WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF
INTERIOR.
WHEREAS, the members of Old Harbor Native Corporation, Akhlok-
Kaguyak, Inc. and Koniag, Inc. are currently involved in a proposed exchange
of 010,000 acres of their inholdings on Kodiak and Sitkalidak Islands with the
Department of Interior; and
WHEREAS. such exchange would result in the acquisition of subsurface
rights in the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) by
said Native Corporations for the purposes of oil and gas development: and
WHEREAS. such exchange would result in a transfer of said Native
Corporation's inholdings to the Department of the Interior as refuge land in
perpetuity, and
WHEREAS, this exchange would be beneficial for Kodiak Island in
ing Wildlife for the use and enjoyment of residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, the opening of ANWR for oil and gas development would be
beneficial for the State of Alaska in providing jobs and revenue.
NOW. THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
hereby formally supports the proposed exchange of lands held by Old Harbor
Native Corporation, Akhiok-Kaguyak. Inc., and Koniag. Inc. on Kodiak and
Sitkalidak Islands to the Department of the Interior for subsurface rights in
the coastal plan of ANWR.
