RESOLUTION NO. 86 -25 -R
A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH ASSEMBLY SUPPORTING
HOLDING THE 1986 SUMMER SUMMIT MEETING IN ALASKA AND URGING CONSIDERATION
OF KODIAK AS THE SITE OF THE MEETING.
WHEREAS, at the Summit Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, between
President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, the
two world leaders agreed to meet again in the summer of 1986, and
WHEREAS, a site for this meeting has not yet been selected, and
WHEREAS, Governor Sheffield has extended an invitation to hold the
meeting in Fairbanks and Senate Joint Resolution 31 would invite the two
leaders to meet in Alaska because of Alaska's historic connection between
the two nations, the emerging importance of the Pacific Rim and the
Arctic in world affairs, and the mutually convenient location of Alaska
to both Washington, D.C. and Moscow, and
WHEREAS, Kodiak Island was the location of the first Russian
settlement in Alaska, it is particularly appropriate for Kodiak Island
Borough to support the Governor and Legislature's invitation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly joins with Governor Sheffield and the Alaska State Legislature
in extending an invitation to President Reagan and General Secretary
Gorbachev to hold the 1986 Summer Summit Meeting in the State of Alaska,
and ask that special consideration be given to holding the meeting in, or
visiting, Kodiak.
