A RESOLUTION OF THE KODIAK ISLAND BOROUGH SUPPORTING
SCALLOP MAR/CULTURE PROJECTS
WHEREAS, the development of aquacultu__ is a priority of the Kodiak I sland [ Borough Coastal Management Plan; and
.1 WHEREAS, the Kodiak Island area has large numbers of natural scallop beds
.ito ascertain seed stock for mariculture; and
jlsca llop mariculture with production exceeding 100,000 metric tons; and
WHEREAS, the Japanese have successfully developed the technology for
WHEREAS, Bill Sheffield, Governor of the State of Alaska, has initiated a
cooperative research effort between Japan and the State to determine the
; feasibility of scallop mariculture in the Kodiak Island area; and
WHEREAS, the State of Alaska and the Japanese Overseas Fishery Cooperationi
Foundation are currently initiating a joint scallop mariculture research
project in the Kodiak Island area; and
WHEREAS, the Kodiak Areas Native Association has successfully secured
grant monies for the development of scallop mariculture for the village of
Akhiok and is cooperating with the State and the Japanese; and
WHEREAS, scallop mariculture, if proven to be economically feasible, could
lead to a cottage industry for the rural areas of the Kodiak Island area,
creating needed jobs while maintaining the traditional life style.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly
strongly supports the initiation and continued efforts being sought to develop
scallop mariculture in the Kodiak Island area, and commends Governor Bill
Sheffield, the Japanese Overseas Fishery Cooperative Foundation and the Kodiak
Area Native Association for their joint cooperative venture.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be sent to Governor
Sheffield, Senator Zharoff, Representative Thompson, Director of Kodiak Area
Native Association, and Overseas Fishery Development Cooperation Foundation of
Japan in care of Michimasa Ogushi, Director of Planning and Coordination.
